Welcome to 1st Grade: Growing Great Minds!
First grade is a year of "firsts." It is a season of rapid growth where students move from decoding words to reading stories, and from counting objects to solving complex problems. Our goal is to foster a lifelong love of learning through exploration, friendship, and discovery.
In 1st grade, we move deeper into core subjects, helping students build the stamina they need for elementary school success.
Literacy: This is the "Year of the Reader." We focus on decoding complex phonics patterns, building fluency, and expanding vocabulary. Students move from writing simple sentences to crafting structured paragraphs with a beginning, middle, and end.
Mathematics: We move beyond basic counting into Number Sense. Students learn strategies for addition and subtraction up to 20, the basics of place value (tens and ones), telling time to the hour and half-hour, and recognizing coins.
Science: We spark curiosity by studying the life cycles of plants and animals, the properties of light and sound, and the patterns of objects in the sky.
Social Studies: We explore what it means to be a citizen. Students learn about maps, American symbols, and how communities work together.
