As the seniors of our elementary school, 5th graders take on a special role in our community. This year is designed to foster a sense of leadership, independence, and academic curiosity. We challenge our students to think globally, act kindly, and prepare themselves for the exciting adventures of middle school and beyond.

Our Academic Focus

The 5th-grade curriculum focuses on mastery and the application of knowledge across all subjects.

• Literacy: Students become literary critics. We analyze complex texts for symbolism, tone, and character development. Writing reaches new heights as students learn to craft compelling argumentative essays, detailed research papers with cited sources, and descriptive creative writing.

• Mathematics: We tackle the "building blocks" of middle school math. Students master operations with fractions and decimals, explore the coordinate plane, and dive into volume and measurement. We emphasize mathematical reasoning—being able to explain why an answer is correct.

• Science: We look at the world through a microscopic and macroscopic lens. Our units cover Matter and its Interactions, the complexity of Ecosystems, and the vastness of the Earth’s Place in the Universe (Space Systems).

• Social Studies: We embark on a journey through U.S. History. From the American Revolution and the drafting of the Constitution to the Civil War and the development of the 50 states, students learn how our past informs our present.
